How to install and use the Nest app for Apple TV

Note: This article is for users who have not migrated their Nest account to a Google Account. Learn about Nest accounts and whether you have a migrated account in our FAQs about accounts in the Nest app.

The Nest app for Apple TV lets you view video from your Google Nest cameras. With Google Nest Aware, you can also watch each camera’s video history.

You already know you can use a phone or tablet to view your Nest camera video. But you can also keep an eye on things with your television and the Nest app for Apple TV. While watching a show or playing a game, it’s easy to flip over and check all your cameras, then go back to what you were doing before.

How to install the Nest app for Apple TV

Before you install the app, make sure your Apple TV meets the system requirements listed at the link below. For example, you’ll need a 4th generation Apple TV (or later). Previous generations of Apple TV do not support apps.

Requirements to use the Nest app >

Note: The Nest App for Apple TV requires at least one Nest camera. The app is great for watching camera feeds, but it doesn’t include controls to view or manage other Nest products in your home. In order to manage the full range of features for all your Nest products, use the Nest app on a phone or tablet, or visit home.nest.com on a computer.

How to install the Nest app for Apple TV

  1. On your Apple TV, sign into the App Store.
  2. In the App Store, select Search, and then type Nest.
  3. Look for the Nest icon Nest app and select the app named Nest (by Nest Labs).
  4. Click Get.

How to sign in

The first time you open the Nest app for Apple TV, you’ll need to sign into your account in the Nest app. Use the remote to enter your email address and password.

If you’ve forgotten either, here’s how to retrieve them:

  • Email address: You can get this information from the Nest app on your phone or tablet. Tap Menu Nest down icon in the top left corner. Under your name, you’ll see the email address associated with your account.

  • Password: You won’t be able to reset your password using the Nest app for Apple TV. Instead, you’ll need to use the Nest app on your phone or tablet, or on a computer at home.nest.com. First, sign out of your account on one of those devices: select Settings Nest settings icon  in the upper corner, select Account, and select Sign out. Then follow our instructions to reset your password if you forgot it.

What the app can do

With the Nest app for Apple TV, you can do the following:

  • View the live feed from all the Nest cameras in your account
  • Turn each camera on or off, and also turn their microphones on or off
  • Watch up to four cameras on one screen, and cycle through any additional cameras in your home
  • If you have at least one Google Nest Protect that needs attention, it will remind you to check its notifications on your phone or tablet

With a Nest Aware subscription, you can do even more:

  • View the entire video history for each of your Nest Cams
  • Quickly jump forward and backward to events on each camera’s timeline

How to watch video

When you open the Nest app (and select a home, if you have more than one), the home screen shows your cameras.

If you have more than one camera, they’ll appear in alphabetical order according to their “where” labels. Swipe left and right on your remote to cycle through all your cameras.

Use the remote to select your camera and view its video full-screen.

Viewing your video history

If your camera has a Nest Aware subscription, you can go back and watch footage in your video history. From the full-screen view, click left or right on the Touch surface of your Apple TV Remote to jump to the events marked on your timeline.

Watching multiple cameras at the same time

The Nest app for Apple TV takes advantage of your television’s large screen to display up to four camera streams in one view.

  • If you have two cameras in the same home: you can watch the video streams from both your cameras at once. This is the default view for the app’s home screen, so all you need to do is open the Nest app and start watching.

  • If you have three or more cameras in the same home: from the home screen, swipe left until you can select All Cameras.

In the All Cameras view, your home’s cameras are displayed in groups of four. If you have more than four cameras, swipe left and right to cycle through the groups.

Note: The cameras need to be in the same Nest home. If you have three cameras, but two are in your first home, and one is in another home, you won’t be able to view all three at the same time.

Learn about viewing clips from your video history

Clips aren’t currently available in the Nest app for Apple TV. Instead, you can view your saved clips on a computer at home.nest.com.

How to create, view and share clips from your video history >

Note: There is a way to watch clips on your television with Apple TV, but it takes a couple extra steps. First, share the clips to a video service like YouTube. Be sure to make the clips private if you want to limit who sees them (for example, see Google.com: change the privacy settings for YouTube video). Then open the corresponding app on your Apple TV (like the YouTube app) to watch the clips on your television.

How to manage your cameras and Nest homes

How to turn your camera and microphone on and off

From the home screen, select a single camera to view it full-screen. Then swipe down to see the options for your camera and its microphone.

How to switch to another Nest home

If you have more than one home in your account, you can switch between them.

On the home screen of the Nest app, press the Menu button and select a home to view its cameras.

Viewing Nest Protect status icons

If you have a Nest Protect that needs attention, an icon will appear on the Nest app’s home screen. It’s there to remind you to open the Nest app on your phone or tablet, or visit home.nest.com, to take care of the notification. You don’t need to do anything to make the icon appear; it happens automatically.

Note: If you have more than one Nest home, the icon will appear only when you’re viewing cameras in that home. You can press the Menu button to switch to another home (see above), and immediately see the state of all of your homes. And of course you can still get notifications on your phone or tablet for all of your homes whenever Nest Protect detects smoke or carbon monoxide.
