Set up Nest Tag

To use Tag to arm and disarm Nest Secure, you first need to add it to your account in the Nest app. Then you can assign it to yourself or another person who has shared access to your Nest home.

You can always arm or disarm Nest Secure with your phone or by entering your passcode on Nest Guard, but with Nest Tag you simply hold it on Guard. There’s no passcode needed.

Before you can use a Tag you’ll have to set it up with the Nest app and assign it to yourself or someone else who shares access to your Nest home. Tags are handy for anyone who you want to access your home but may not have an account in the Nest app. For instance, you can give them to your kids or to a guest so that they don’t need to remember a passcode while they’re staying with you.

Set up Tag with Nest app

  1. Tap Settings Nest settings icon in the top right corner of the app home screen.

  2. Select Add product

  3. Scan the Nest Tag’s QR code QR icon

Use your phone or tablet’s camera to scan the QR code on the back of your Tag. Just point your phone or tablet’s camera at the QR code. Fit the QR code into the blue box to complete the scan.

Note: You won’t need to switch to your phone or tablet’s camera app – simply scan the QR code from the Nest app.

If you’re having trouble scanning the QR code, see the following article for tips and an alternate setup method using the Entry Key on Tag.

  4. You’ll have two options on this screen:

    • Tap Add home entry only to assign the Tag to someone who only needs to arm and disarm Nest Secure. This option is for people who you don’t want to give control of your Nest products, like your dog walker or children.

    • Tap a person who already has Full Access to your home to assign a Tag to them. They’ll get a notification on their phone letting them know their Tag is ready to use.

Note: If you don’t see someone who you’ve already invited, they probably haven't accepted the invitation.

Transfer a Tag to a different person

If you only need to loan someone your Tag for a short time, you can just give them a Tag to use without transferring ownership with the Nest app. But if you do this, the app won’t accurately tell you who’s entering or leaving your home in Security History.

So if they’re going to be using a Tag more than once or twice, it’s best to re-assign it to them with the app. It’s easy to do, but there are a few rules that apply to giving Nest Tags to other people:

  • You can only transfer a Tag that is already assigned to you or a person who has Home Entry Only access.
  • People with Home Entry Only access can’t enable, disable or transfer Tags to other people.
  • You can assign and reassign a Nest Tag to different people as many times as you want.
  1. Tap the Security icon on the Nest app home screen.
  2. Tap Settings  Nest settings icon.
  3. Select a Nest Tag that you want to transfer.
  4. Select Transfer Nest Tag.

Note: This option will only appear if you selected a Nest Tag assigned to you or someone with Home Entry Only Access.

  5. Then choose the person you want to give the Tag to. When the transfer is finished, the app will automatically go back to the Settings screen.

The tag will be ready for the new owner to use immediately.

Give Nest Tag access to another home

It’s easy to give a person’s Nest Tag access to another home. The other home can be in the same account or it can be in another account in the Nest app. The steps are different for each.

Add access to another home in your account

Follow these steps if you want to give someone access to all or some homes in your account. For instance, you may want them to arm or disarm Nest Secure at your vacation home in addition to your main residence.

Follow these steps if you want to give someone access to all or some homes in your account. For instance, you may want them to arm or disarm Nest Secure at your vacation home in addition to your main residence.

  1. Tap Settings Nest settings iconon the Nest app home screen.
  2. Select Family and Guests.
  3. Then tap the person that the Tag is assigned to.
  4. Make sure the Tag is enabled. If it’s not, tap the switch under Nest Tag access.
  5. Tap Transfer Nest Tag.
  6. You should see all of your homes with Nest Secure installed. Tap another home to add a checkmark.

Now you can use Tag to arm and disarm all of your homes.

Tip: If you ever decide to disable the Tag’s access to one of your homes, follow the steps above and tap a home to remove its checkmark. If you ever misplace or lose your Tag, be sure to disable or remove it in the Nest app.

Troubleshoot adding another home to Tag

If you’re not seeing the option to add another home to Tag, double check to make sure all of the following are true:

  • All of your homes need to be in your account in the Nest app. You can’t use your Tag to disarm a home that isn’t in your account. You either need to be the Owner of the home or sharing access with Family Accounts.

  • Nest Secure needs to be up and running in all of your homes. If you haven’t set up Nest Secure in another home yet, you won’t be able to access the home with Tag.

  • Your Tag needs to be already set up in one of your homes. If you haven’t done this, see above.

Add access to a home in some else's account

Follow these steps if you want to give someone access to your home when they already have a Tag that they’re using to access someone else’s Nest home. They’ll be able to use the same Tag for both homes and won’t have to carry two around with them. To use one Tag for both homes, they’ll have to be given Full Access.

  1. If you haven't already, invite the person to share access to your home. Once they accept your invitation, they’ll appear on your Family and Guests list in the Nest app. They can then enable Tag access to your home in their Tag settings.

  2. They can tap Settings Nest settings icon on the app home screen, then select their Tag.

  3. In the Tag settings menu, tap the name of the home so a checkmark appears next to it.
