How to restart Heat Link or reset it to factory defaults

When troubleshooting, you have two reset options: simply restart Heat Link to help it reconnect to the network, or reset Heat Link to factory defaults to remove it from the app altogether and start from scratch.

You can restart or reset Heat Link to factory defaults by pressing and holding the Nest button for a specific amount of time. The Nest button is the large button on the front of Heat Link.

How to restart Heat Link

Restarting Heat Link is like restarting a computer or a phone. It simply turns off Heat Link, then turns it back on. After powering back up, Heat Link will automatically reconnect to your thermostat and continue running your system according to your schedule.

Heat Link for Nest Thermostat E

  1. Press and hold Heat Link's button for 8 seconds, then release it.
  2. Heat Link's status light will pulse blue to tell you that it's restarting.
  3. Wait a few moments, then check your thermostat. If you see an error message about Heat Link being disconnected, that means the restart didn’t solve your issue and you should continue troubleshooting. See our article about troubleshooting thermostat error codes.

Note: If you hold Heat Link's button for longer than 8 seconds, it can reset to factory defaults. See the section below for details.

Heat Link for 3rd gen Nest Learning Thermostat

  1. Press and hold Heat Link's button for 10 seconds, then release it.
  2. Heat Link will reset. This will take a few seconds.
  3. When the reset is complete, check the color of Heat Link's status light:
    • Green: Heat Link has re-connected to your thermostat and everything is working normally.
    • Yellow: Heat Link is not connected to your thermostat. check your thermostat screen for an exact error code, then see our article about troubleshooting thermostat error codes.

Heat Link 2nd gen Nest Learning Thermostat

  1. Press and hold Heat Link's button for 10 seconds, then release it.
  2. Heat Link will reset. This will take a few seconds.
  3. When the reset is complete, check the color of Heat Link's status light:
    • Green: Heat Link has re-connected to your thermostat and everything is working normally.
    • Yellow: Heat Link is not connected to your thermostat. check your thermostat screen for an exact error code, then see our article about troubleshooting thermostat error codes.

How to reset Heat Link to factory defaults

Resetting Heat Link to factory defaults erases all settings and disconnects it from your thermostat.

Note: Only use a factory reset if you've exhausted other troubleshooting steps or have been instructed to do so.

Heat Link for Nest Thermostat E

Important: When you reset Heat Link for Nest Thermostat E to factory defaults, it will remove Heat Link from your account in the app. You'll need to set up your Heat Link from scratch again.

  1. Remove your Heat Link from your account in the app.
  2. Press and hold Heat Link's button for 20 seconds. Heat Link's status light will turn solid yellow. Release the button.
  3. When the factory reset is complete, the status light will pulse blue to let you know.
  4. Now you'll need to add your Heat Link back to the app:
    • Remove Heat Link's cover so that you can see the QR code on top of the battery compartment.
    • In the app, go to Settings Nest settings icon and then Add product.
    • Follow the on-screen instructions to scan the QR code and add Heat Link back to the app. When asked, tell the app that Heat Link is already installed, which lets you skip the instructions about installing it on your wall. 

Heat Link for 3rd gen Nest Learning Thermostat

  1. Press and hold Heat Link's button for 20 seconds. Heat Link's status light will turn off, then it will start quickly blinking yellow. Release the button.
  2. When the factory reset is complete, Heat Link's status light will pulse blue.
  3. Normally, Heat Link should automatically reconnect to your Nest thermostat after you reset it to factory defaults. Wait a few moments and then check your thermostat to confirm.
    • If your thermostat asks for a pairing code, look on the bottom of Heat Link for the 6-digit code.
    • If your thermostat is showing an error code, visit our article about thermostat error codes for further troubleshooting.

Heat Link for 2nd gen Nest Learning thermostat 

  1. Press and hold Heat Link's button for 20 seconds.
  2. While you're holding the button, Heat Link's status light will turn off, then it will start quickly blinking green and yellow. Release the button.
  3. When the factory reset is complete, Heat Link's status light will blink green and yellow.
  4. Normally, Heat Link should automatically reconnect to your Nest thermostat after you reset it to factory defaults. Wait a few moments and then check your thermostat to confirm.
    • If your thermostat asks for a pairing code, look on the bottom of Heat Link for the 6-digit code.
    • If your thermostat is showing an error code, visit our article about thermostat error codes for further troubleshooting.

Tip: If you need to heat your home while Heat Link is disconnected from your thermostat, you can manually turn the heat on and off by pressing Heat Link's button.
