Troubleshoot automatic Eco Temperature for Nest thermostat on a stand

If your Google Nest thermostat is on the Nest Stand and it's not switching between the Eco Temperature and heating when you think it should, there are some simple fixes.

In general, it's especially important that your thermostat is located on a flat surface at the recommended height between 0.75 and 1 metre above the floor.

Before troubleshooting

If your thermostat is set to switch between Eco Temperature and heating automatically when you leave and come home, it will wait a while after everyone leaves before switching to Eco Temperature.

How long your thermostat will wait depends on where it's installed and what it's learned about your home and your habits. In some cases, the delay can be a couple of hours, so be patient.

If your thermostat hasn't switched to Eco Temperature after a few hours, you can manually set your thermostat to Eco Temperature if needed, then follow the steps below to troubleshoot.

Note: The troubleshooting steps in this article generally apply if you don't have a phone helping with presence sensing. If your phone is helping with presence sensing and you're having trouble, troubleshoot automatic switching for your thermostat.

Troubleshooting steps

1. Make sure automatic switching to Away is set to switch to Eco Temperature

Someone may have changed Home and Away Routines (Home app) or Home/Away Assist (Nest app) settings to keep it from switching your thermostat to Eco Temperature. Check that switching to Eco Temperature is enabled with the app or on the thermostat.

2. Check the Nest Stand location

Where you place your thermostat can have a big impact on how well it automatically switches between Eco Temperature and heating when you leave and come home.

First, check the location of your Nest Stand to make sure your thermostat can sense activity, then adjust its placement if needed.

Important: You should only move your Nest thermostat if necessary. Even if you've moved it a few inches or to a new room, it will need to re-learn in its new location. If you've adjusted its location, you should reset what your thermostat has learned about your home and your habits.

Tips

  • Your thermostat should be placed between 0.75 and 1 metre above the floor.
  • For instance, if you've placed your thermostat too far back from the edge of a shelf, worktop or table, its sensors can be blocked and it may not sense if you're at home or away. Move it closer to the edge to try to fix the issue.
  • If you've placed your Nest Stand on a low surface such as a TV stand, your thermostat may be noticing your pets and not switch to Eco Temperature. Move it to a higher location to try to fix the issue.

3. Check that Routines aren't adjusting the thermostat

Occasionally, Google Home or Assistant Routines can prevent your thermostat from switching to Eco Temperature.

If you suspect a Routine is adjusting the thermostat, check its recent activity:

  • To check Household or scripted Routines, Open the Google Home app Google Home app and then tap Activity .
  • To check your Personal Routines, go to My Activity. Other home members might also need to check their Personal Routines.
    • Note: You must have Web and App Activity turned on.

Change the settings of a Routine:

  1. Open the Google Home app Google Home app and then tap Automations and then the name of the Routine.
  2. Adjust its settings and then tap Save.

4. Reset Auto-Away learning

Normally, you only need to reset thermostat learning if you recently changed your habits or moved your thermostat to a new spot.

After you've reset what your thermostat has learned, it will relearn your habits and temperature preferences. It will be ready to switch to Eco Temperatures again automatically in a few days.

Follow these steps to reset Away:

  1. Press the thermostat ring to open the Quick View screen and select Settings.
  2. Select Reset.
  3. Choose Away and follow the on-screen instructions.

5. Add a phone to help with automatic switching to Home and Away

Home and Away Routines and Home/Away Assist use your phone's location to let your thermostat know when you're home and when you've left. Phone location can help your thermostat switch between Eco Temperature and heating without your thermostat having to sense you.
